BREAK BREAD AND BE MERRY

Bonjour!

How are you all? It has been a very busy few weeks here at Pig’Halle and Duo – even the terrible weather hasn’t kept people indoors! Which is just wonderful news for us and a typical hardy Scots attitude from all of you!  We played host to the Slow Food Group just a few weeks ago, fed a wedding party, threw a proper full on food and drink hoolie for some friends leaving for New York and, on Easter Monday night we are closed for some regular guests private celebrations!  It has almost written the blog for me this week – the joy that is good friends, good company and good food. Breaking bread and talking amongst loved ones remains one of my favourite ways to spend an evening.

Family eating together

When I grew up eating and drinking together was part of normal, everyday family life.  You sit down, you break bread, you chat about your day and you plan your weekends.  Happy, sad, funny, indifferent – we shared our stories while eating home-cooked meals and  chattering loudly.  I loved sitting around the table – its how we worked as a family.  I think this is true of most people in my generation. Herve has the same story to tell – can you imagine growing up in France? Food is all but the second religion for goodness sake – sitting on the sofa with a TV dinner is not an option!

As I grew older, like everyone, the gathering of friends replaced my family dinners and the drinking of wine replaced the breaking of bread! I cannot tell a lie – I enjoyed my student life as much as the next person! But slowly, as you have your own children, as you grow a bit older, the two worlds meet somewhere in the middle and you realise that they do not have to be mutually exclusive.   Sit at my table, tear a chunk of home-made bread, pass the potatoes and I shall pour you a glass of wine and tell you a funny story about how Herve shot a deer! My kids, their friends, my family, new friends… everyone is welcome in my house.

Good food tastes better in good company. A simple fact of life!  From the humble pizza to fine a la carte!

This idea of entertaining, of gathering people over food and merriment is why I love my business as much as I do.  Herve and I met through a mutual love of food first and then each other!  I adore the noise of a busy, loud restaurant – every last chink of a glass, sizzle of a steak, glug of a wine bottle and hearty, throaty laugh of a customer listening to a friend’s story. Its why we do this!

Perth’s Slow Food Convivium joined us recently – I love the way this group eat. They come in couples or groups or singles and they sit old school dinners style, in long rows, with strangers, acquaintances or friends from the last time. They are convivial! Wine flows, food is loved and enjoyed, three courses, coffees, a little more wine. They enjoy food and the sole purpose of their group is to get together and make sure they enjoy it with each other!  Simple.

I do love when someone comes in to book the venue out – its a little change of pace and being part of someone’s special celebrations is always such a privilege. Planning menus, choosing wines, looking at moving tables for dancing… all part of the fun! You may not realise that we welcome large groups and celebrations, in both PIg’Halle and Duo but we do! I insist on it in fact! I pull on my black dress, get my legs out for an airing and at some points you may even see me dancing with your guests!

We had a group of girls in DUO last week – booked out for pizzas and wine – and I was almost tempted at one point to pull up a chair, grab a glass and find out that week’s gossip!  Would someone out there make my day, book a party and invite me to come as a guest… Herve can serve the wine!  Joking aside, we would love to chat to you about your celebrations or get together here at DUO or Pig’Halle.  Drop in if you’d like to find out a bit more.

See you all very soon – I’m off to call my friends to invite them to dinner; I’m just in the mood now for gossip and bourguignon.
